How To Stay Focused When Working From Home

Nowadays, many of us choose to work from home, particularly because it can save both time and money. However, people can sometimes find working at home distracting, which can have a negative effect on their productivity levels. With this in mind, here are a few tips on how to stay focused and disciplined while working from home.

Create an appropriate working environment:

Make sure you dedicate a particular room or area to be used as your workspace. It is important that this space is kept professional, uncluttered and free from any distractions, such as a television. Make sure the space has efficient lighting and if you can, work in an area that won’t draw-in lots of outdoor noise. Your office chair should be comfortable and supporting, but make sure it is not a chair that you are likely to slouch in.

Dress appropriately:

When working at home, it isn’t necessary to dress in a formal suit and tie. However, you should make sure that you wear something that is comfortable and perhaps a little different from your normal attire, as this will get you in the working mind-set. Always get dressed, as working in your pyjamas is very likely to reduce your productivity.

Schedule:

Make a daily or weekly schedule so that your time is well-organised. It is important that you set out your specific working hours and make sure that you do not get distracted during this time.

Maintain a healthy working day:

Just like working in an office, it is vital that you break from your work – and this does not mean you should sit in front of the television for an hour. Instead, take a brief walk, or eat your lunch outside. With lunch, resist the temptation to delve into the cupboards for junk food and a quick fix. Get into the habit of making a healthy meal the evening before, so that you have no excuse if you find yourself particularly busy.
